which is better for home theater – dvd with built-in amp or separate dvd player and amp?

I am planning to buy a home theater package and want to choose between Yamaha YHT-175 and Samsung XT-HQ100. Yamaha is only the amp and I need to buy a dvd player separately. Samsung is dvd with built-in amp.

hello there, for me you better not have the built in amp with the DVD for your home theater because if it is say so, it is another special feature of that said DVD which is higher in price, however, there advantage is that they are always compatible because they are design to be together in terms of performing, in contrary, if you are going to purchase a non built in DVD and amp, you can save some $$$ and you can choose the wattage of your choice JUST make sure that some expert technician will assemble or connect it for you to avoid incompatibility.
I would suggest separate components… easier to upgrade/replace. Don’t cheap out on the connecting cables, though.
I sold both for quite a few years and I would not consider buying the Samsung system with the DVD player built into the receiver. Not only does this inevitably cause difficult service/repair questions for you, these systems are almost always lower in quality. The Yamaha system is going to give you better sound and last longer. It will also give you greater flexibility over the years. I recommend a Sony DVD player to go with it. No DVD players are perfect but I think Sony makes the best ones for the money. One question you do not raise is the difference in quality between the speakers in those systems. The YHT series speakers are not “high end” speakers but they will sound better than those that come with the Samsung system and I predict they will also last longer. The YHT subwoofer will probably far outperform the Samsung sub. No contest there.
seperate is better, 1 power supply to 1 amp means more power on demand
also the Yamaha amps are just much better then the Samsung amp

Having seperate components is the way to go all the time. When you have a combo unit like this it usually comes with there speaker system and inferior connection capabilities.
I myself would look at a nice Denon or Harmon/Kardon amp
and some nice speakers unless you have them already
Klipsch or Nuance are nice so are Polk Audio or Mirage.
Then pair it up with a new Panasonic HDMI Dvd player this way if you already have the Big Screen HDMI compatible
better picture and sound just plug in but if you don’t when you upgrade the TV you already have the most recent DVD player upgrade.

I have found that buying electronics separate works best, if one fails, and you take it for repair, you don’t loose the other one for the same amount of time.
Also, I have seen Dvd/Amps that are lacking on some very important audio/video imputs.
Like optical and coaxil cable, extra component inputs, and outputs. Plus your gonna want to hook up things like TV, Cable box, VCR, maybe, and a gaming platform, or two,
If you do buy the all in one unit make sure it has at least 1 HDMI out put for HiDef images, Component inputs and outputs, at least 600watts total output, and a power subwoofer. regular subs just dont work that well.
I am a HUGE fan of working on my entertainment center,
I spent at least 3 hours last night hooking up my DVDto my receiver, plus the cable box, and VCR, plus a Nintendo 64, and A ps3 to the TV. I hope this helps.
The Yamaha will sound better. As for the DVD player, take a look at one of the Oppo models. I have one myself (DV-981HD) and it is probably the best value out there right now.
