Well i have a onkyo tx-sr803 and it does me good. i think onkyo products are good it does get warm but not hot at all.
I not sure about Onkyo quality, my brand new onkyo receiver has a hdmi port video issue has to reset after talk to a rep. And does get really hot at top. I had pionner now it is much cooler /
Both are excellent receivers . The 806 is definitely worth the extra cost. It has a much better transformer in it , making it a substantially heavier unit . Both offer great sound ( very musical) , easy to use interface and set up . Remote control handsets are okay , but still not as good as what they could be.
highonpsi,
If the signal coming from your satellite receiver is 4:3 then the picture will have to be stretched or “zoomed in” to get it to take up the whole screen.
So, either the Onkyo receiver is going to do that, or your TV will do that. You’ll have to do a little trial an error to determine what looks best.
Hope that helps,

so if i hook up a satellite receiver to it and it upconverts SD, does it also upconvert it to 16:9 widescreen with the proper ratio (not stretched) or does it just upconvert the picture quality and stay with the black bars on the sides?
I just ordered a “S” version sr806, I can not wait. driving Klipsch speakers and a 50″ 1080 Samsung plasma
Stepping up to the TX-SR876 delivers a big bump in that spec. Rated at 65 amps of instant current.
I am seriously loooking into getting an Onkyo, although I am a Marantz fan. Marantz receivers sound great, are generally less expensive, and more reliable than Harman Kardon and run really cool compared to other high-current receivers.
But I notice the Onkyo TX SR 606 is an amazing value.
It can apparently generate 36 amperes of high instantaneous current, which a tad more than the Harman Kardon AVR 354, yet the Onkyo is way less expensive with far more features
my 706 doesnt get that warm, it does heat up but nothing close to dangerous levels, probably no more than my 8 year old kenwood amp would heat up, mind you i have never had it on for more than about 90 mins at a time so far
Hi Thomasward100,
Sound quality is really what it all boils down to with receivers. You should do what I just did, go to Crutchfield, pull up all the receivers and compare the customer comments and ratings. Both Onkyo and Denon receivers are getting rave reviews and 5 out of 5 star ratings.
I’ve been a Crutchfield Advisor sine 1996, and most people I’ve talked with put the Onkyo and Denon on equal footing.
That was the long way of saying yes, Onkyo and Denon receivers sound great!
Does the current Onkyo line match Denon in SQ and durability?
Johnny,
You are correct that the 606 upgrades to 1080i and the 706 goes all the way to 1080p. You get a couple other upgrades when you go to the 706 as well, like THX Select2 Plus certification, a better remote, Sirius and XM ready, a phono input, and Audyssey MultiEQ auto setup (606 has 2EQ setup).
As for the heat, Onkyo receivers do get a little warm, but not dangerously hot. As with any receiver they should be allowed to breathe so they can run as cool as possible.

The Onkyo Tr sr-606 has gotten a lot of positive reviews, but it can only upgrade to 1080i, not 1080p like the 706.
I have heard they run dangerously hot though…

How does Harman Kardon AVR354 compare to Onkyo 806?
Superbanana,
The answer to that question depends on many other factors, such as room size, what you’ll be listening to, movies, music, etc, where you want the speakers to be located and how large you want them to be.

What speaker system would go well with the 706?
