Let’s all face it the high definition revolution is upon us now and we have to begin to embrace it. We are being bombarded with TV adverts, radio adverts, bill board adverts and even on the internet telling us to get a HD TV or sign up to Sky HD – there’s no way of escaping! But although it will be a few years until this HD revolution fully takes over it is still worth considering getting it now if you have the dosh.

HD really does look the business and if you need convincing then get yourself down to your nearest electronics store. But seen as you are reading this anyway I may as explain a bit why HD is so good and be warned I’m about to get a bit technical here…

In its most basic of explanations I shall compare a HD TV with that of a standard one. Standard TVs known as standard definition televisions have a almost square picture with a ratio of around 4:3. The pixels (which is the number of tiny dots that make up the picture) is roughly 704 x 480. The picture was interlaced which means that each piece of the moving images was really half a picture and the pictures changed so quickly that the brain did not register this. Also standard definition TVs relied on analogue signals.

HDTVs are digital and use information in the form of ones and zeros. The information travels through cables as electrical pulses and the aspect ratio is 16:9 – a lot higher than standard definition. The resolution is also much higher with 1920 x 1080 pixels and the picture is the whole thing rather than half an image unlike its predecessor.

Due to the wider screen and the more pixels and the fact that HDTVs can display more colour HDTVs need more data and need it fast compared with standard definition TVs and this is where the HDMI cable comes into play.

HDMI cables allows for a high bandwidth connections between digital devices and with the correct set up can make a huge difference to your home-theatre system. HDMI cables can cut down on the number of cables –ridding you of the spaghetti problem- and can also reduce the number of remote controls you need for all the appliances.

Before you run off and start buying your home theatre system you have to make sure that all the appliances are compatible with HDMI. Also when buying the cable make sure you buy the correct length as many people by shorter cables thinking they are saving money but then find out that they can’t connect their home theatre together.

I won’t continue but will rather let you check out what HD has to offer yourself. Of course standard definition does the job fine but I must say that there is nothing better than seeing England score a goal and feeling like you are there…then again this rarely happens!

The wiring system will include things like pay TV, sound systems, computer and Internet connections, phone and fax lines, home security, intelligent lighting and other automatic services. The process is a simple one and can normally be installed by a single electrician as it is a standardised system and is an affordable way to future proof your house wiring system.

You can choose the type of wiring you want to suit your budget. For instance if you do not wish to install any home security systems and don’t believe you ever will, you simply leave this component out of the wiring to make the installation cheaper.

As far as your home theatre system is concerned, you may need to consider the length of your speaker cables. If you have a requirement over 15 m then you will need to change the specifications to include HDMI optical and speaker cables and to use HDMI and speaker wall plates. Your electrician can be instructed to install noggin or cavity plates.

If you are going to be installing ceiling speakers, you may need to consider running the wiring in the cavity of your walls or along the skirting boards. This way you will have increased flexibility if you want to change equipment or the configuration of your room at a later date.

Smart wiring is designed to be installed after you have made your choices from the various packages available. The most basic package includes television, Internet and telephony services and costs around $3000. Naturally you can choose from a large number of variations to include home theatre installations and automation, climate and security packages. But you are not limited to using a patented ‘Smart Wiring’ package.

You can get your builder to work with your electrician and install what is known in the industry as Structured Cabling, which is a well engineered wiring combination modified to your specifications.

Consumers are becoming increasingly aware of the need to prepare for technological advances. You only have to review the changes that have taken place in the past decade to gauge what might be possible in the next few years. Smart wiring will set you up for future changes and help you avoid the substantial costs involved in rewiring your house.

Hard wiring also has an advantage over wireless technology. At this stage wireless installations are only able to cope with low-level digital content, whereas a smart wired house will have no trouble handling the huge data content demanded by the most modern audiovisual systems.

As stated here, you are not limited to using patented system, you can simply choose the services you wish and plan the installation during the construction or renovation phase. This way, when you are ready for your new TV installation it will be a simple matter of plug and play.

The amount of money that a person is willing to spend need to be considered at the outset.
